Sunday, bloody Sunday…..these were most probably the thoughts running through the heads of more than one of us come Sunday tee, with the sun belting down and The Vintage providing us with a heat sink to swelter in, it was going to be tough knowing that you couldn’t belt a few lagers in if you were expecting to drive home that afternoon, which we all were!
The first shots were fired in all directions and the search parties began the emu march looking for lost balls, again the tight first few holes put paid to a few hopefuls, surprising enough it was Manpower Menzies who led the field early putting together 7 points over the first three holes, unfortunately the boozy fog lifted and he only managed another 4 by the turn! Phil “wee wee” Richie led with 15, whilst Ben and AD were not just in a one on one battle, but also a battle to see if either of them could score a point, AD had 1 through 6 holes and Ben 3! AD complained of having the “gin shakes” and couldn’t hold his putter without shaking like a junkie over a needle! A cold lager put paid to that and he promptly holed a birdie putt from the fringe on the par 5 7th to quadruple his score!
Somehow during the calamity that was day 2, Merce had his golf bag fall off his cart, now that doesn’t sound to unusual as it happens occasionally, but when it happens to Merce you just know that there’s more to it and there was, not only did his bag fall off, but it snapped his driver shaft! Leaving him with an unfriendly 3 wood to try and bring him home. Group 2 were just in awe of what can only be called puppy golf being played by Nathan and Phil, both playing with left to right cuts of equal distance on nearly every shot, following each other across fairway and green like two puppies leading each other around and they nearly finished on equal points too! Glen, on the other hand had found a fairway bunker, with a nasty lie, the ball only inches away from the front lip, he weighed up his options, choose the appropriate weapon and took a full swing……….only to catch the bunker lip taking a chunk out, but leaving the ball exactly where it was, having not been touched! Ah it’s a wonderful game!!
From nowhere big Glen Stewart started to find the middle of his driver and also a few greens, he crept up the leader board oblivious that his playing partner was the overnight leader who was becoming increasingly nervy over every putt! Glen’s last four holes netted him 9 points which would be enough to take the days win, but was it enough to take overall honours?
The leaderboard for the day looked like this:

It left us with a tie for the overall prize, but neither could be arsed to get into any sort of play off, so split the prize pool.

We had a great time again in the Hunter, the course was good, the golf terrible but lots of fun we certainly had, we are interested in any suggestions for next year, although we have decided that being only a short drive away from home is a good thing and will look to keep to within that distance generally, James “Herb” Mercer is unofficially the official trip away organiser and he did a great job with the digs for this year, just under $400 per person is pretty bloody good I reckon, but if you have suggestions let him or any of us on the Spackler committee know.
