PowerGolf Spackler deal

We've worked out a deal with PowerGolf that will hopefully be better and easier then the other golf deal we previously had. They have three stores, the original Alexandria store, Castle Hill and a small shop at St Leonards - see here for maps.

Every store has a golf simulator so you can hit new clubs and get an idea of where you'll lose your new balls off your new club!

Below is the outline of the deal for us:
  • 10% off Clothing, Footwear + Accessories
  • 7.5% off Bags and Buggies
  • 5% off Hardware and Balls
  • All of the above discounts exclude specials or discounted items
  • Every 6 months a voucher is done for 4% of total purchases for that period.
We would also keep your group informed on upcoming specials and promotions. Any other questions or queries please don't hesitate to ask. Please mention Spackler Golf to one of the managers present on the day.

Contacts for Alexandria are Hector McAulay, Paul Jenner, Alan Jankelowitz and Darryl Mallach. For St Leonards and Castle Hill stores, Nick Odze, Jason Odze or Todd Brown.

Spackler trip ‘09 – Day 2

Warm-up day
Day 1 Report
Day 2 Report

Sunday, bloody Sunday…..these were most probably the thoughts running through the heads of more than one of us come Sunday tee, with the sun belting down and The Vintage providing us with a heat sink to swelter in, it was going to be tough knowing that you couldn’t belt a few lagers in if you were expecting to drive home that afternoon, which we all were!

The first shots were fired in all directions and the search parties began the emu march looking for lost balls, again the tight first few holes put paid to a few hopefuls, surprising enough it was Manpower Menzies who led the field early putting together 7 points over the first three holes, unfortunately the boozy fog lifted and he only managed another 4 by the turn! Phil “wee wee” Richie led with 15, whilst Ben and AD were not just in a one on one battle, but also a battle to see if either of them could score a point, AD had 1 through 6 holes and Ben 3! AD complained of having the “gin shakes” and couldn’t hold his putter without shaking like a junkie over a needle! A cold lager put paid to that and he promptly holed a birdie putt from the fringe on the par 5 7th to quadruple his score!

Somehow during the calamity that was day 2, Merce had his golf bag fall off his cart, now that doesn’t sound to unusual as it happens occasionally, but when it happens to Merce you just know that there’s more to it and there was, not only did his bag fall off, but it snapped his driver shaft! Leaving him with an unfriendly 3 wood to try and bring him home. Group 2 were just in awe of what can only be called puppy golf being played by Nathan and Phil, both playing with left to right cuts of equal distance on nearly every shot, following each other across fairway and green like two puppies leading each other around and they nearly finished on equal points too! Glen, on the other hand had found a fairway bunker, with a nasty lie, the ball only inches away from the front lip, he weighed up his options, choose the appropriate weapon and took a full swing……….only to catch the bunker lip taking a chunk out, but leaving the ball exactly where it was, having not been touched! Ah it’s a wonderful game!!

From nowhere big Glen Stewart started to find the middle of his driver and also a few greens, he crept up the leader board oblivious that his playing partner was the overnight leader who was becoming increasingly nervy over every putt! Glen’s last four holes netted him 9 points which would be enough to take the days win, but was it enough to take overall honours?

The leaderboard for the day looked like this:
Glen 30
Phil 29
Nathan 28
James 27
Bathwater 26
Bats 26
Merce 25
Deano 23
AD 21
Brent 20
Ben 17

It left us with a tie for the overall prize, but neither could be arsed to get into any sort of play off, so split the prize pool.

Glen & James 56
Phil 53
Merce 52
Bats & Bathw 50
Deano 49
Ben 45
Brent 41
AD 40
Nathan 36

We had a great time again in the Hunter, the course was good, the golf terrible but lots of fun we certainly had, we are interested in any suggestions for next year, although we have decided that being only a short drive away from home is a good thing and will look to keep to within that distance generally, James “Herb” Mercer is unofficially the official trip away organiser and he did a great job with the digs for this year, just under $400 per person is pretty bloody good I reckon, but if you have suggestions let him or any of us on the Spackler committee know.

Spackler Trip '09 warm-up day

Well to say we had a good time up in the Hunter would be an understatement nearly as big as saying Tiger is probably the best player in the world!!

We started our jaunt with a trip to a good old fashioned country golf course, which wasn’t just cheap and cheerful, but provided us with an entertaining round filled with dog leg holes and cold beer, all, right next door to the Cessnock Correctional facility!!

The format for the day at The Oaks Country Club, Cessnock, was a two ball best ball stableford, since we didn’t have any pro’s in our field we couldn’t have a pro-am, so we had to settle for am-am, so the teams lined up like this;

Brothers Mercer
Ritchie, Bathwater
Double B’s (Brent, Bats)
AB (AD, Ben)

The results like this;

Brothers Mercer 48pts
Ritchie, Bathwater 46pts
Double B’s 44pts
A & B 43pts

Returning former inaugural player Paul “The Bats” Battersby made what would be classified as a crucial error on his resumption to Spackler events, after much conjecture about what handicap he should play off, backed up by his teammate, he was, through gritted teeth allowed to play off 24, by the end of play he had 42 points and was informed by his new playing group that, that would be the last time he would play off that and was duly cut for the remainder of the real weekends play! Our individual winner of the day was Merce with 43, where Bats casually asked what Merce would play off for the remainder of the weekend was quickly cut off by Brothers Merce with “non comp”!!!!!!!!!

Tuned up and ready, Greg Norman please provide us your best at The Vintage!

Spackler trip ‘09 – Day 1

Day 1 at the Vintage and the field were eager to impose themselves on the course, the format was to be single stableford, with a winner each day and the overall winner going to the highest combined total.

Things didn’t start well on the tight opening 5 holes, made even worse by the first group requesting the beer wench head back to the pro shop to fetch them an esky, leaving the groups following very hot and dry! The real reason was Deano and Brent were on a mission to drink a can a hole, which was possibly going to be more then the points they would score!

There were cries of despair to be heard all over the Vintage that day, with a common scream being “F*@k you Greg Norman”! The fairways ran and the greens were quick and proving difficult to read, it was obvious early that playing anywhere close to your handicap could win the day and leave you the overnight leader, playing better than near to his handicap was the irrepressible Ben Warhurst, who tore up the front 9 to turn with 21 points the highlight being a birdie 3 on the par 4 6th hole which netted him 5 stableford points!! The lead was 6 points and counting.

The back nine however seemed to change Ben’s mojo, he wiped the 10th and struggled to find a point anywhere coming in, it seemed that the Greg Norman course could give not only his view of course design, but also his inability to close out! We all putted out and fell into the lounges in air conditioned comfort and cold ale, the scoreboard was not pretty, but there’s always Sunday!

Much to Herb’s disbelief he didn’t get to wear The Jacket or any jacket. He will be known as a trip away specialist if he doesn’t break his Spackler duck soon! We moved on and had a great afternoon at Brokenwood Estate for a wine tasting, where we were given a private room and lots of attention. Off to dinner at Blaxlands and then to disco central Harrigans Pub, where we got to listen to the sweet tunes of DJ Jazzy Shareef and watch future Manpower dancers Deano ride the pony and Brent put on a show to end all shows!

Bring on Sunday golf and hangovers!

Spackler XII - Report 3

Group 2 by Patrick Gassner

Apologies all was a little too upset to comment on my group 2 performance but after the therapy I am feeling positive about golf again and would like to add my groups summary for Spackler X11 “the season finale”. Personally am still shattered at another Cupless year but have pledged to return a new player in 2010.

The day started early – real early!

Mikael and I decided to car pool from Manly and him being from Sweden and me from Qld and having never been that far west in Sydney we got to the course 1.5hrs early. Now that was upsetting in itself but the even more disturbing was seeing Bathwater already at the course. Our confidence was severely shaken as we watched cup favourite Chris B go through his morning calisthenics then mercilessly crush driver after driver into the poor unsuspecting driving net. You could almost hear the Glenmore Par 3’s shaking in their boots!

From then on the golf was a blur. New comers Dan and Mikael looked like they were going to tear the place apart that is until they started playing anyway. Crapper and I tried to calm the nerves of the newcomers with our worldly Spackler wisdom but as anyone knows first time in the Spackler Octagon is not for the faint hearted.

Although watching Dan Myself and Chris see how far we could miss fairways by was very amusing all day the highlight was easily Mikael (the new Swede’s) enterprising bunker play (caught on film please see this link). I challenge anyone to hit arse first out of a bunker he has the touch of a young Edberg.None of us played to our generous handicaps so will refrain from a hole by hole as it is not deserved (besides the ensuing binge drinking has hazed most of the detail). I will however boldly go on record and declare that should Dan mentally recover from his debut that he will win a Spackler by the end of 2010 – odds anybody?
