Groupings for final Spackler Invitational of 2010

The groups have been done for Spackler on Sunday, with only one notable absentee from the list of possibles, that being one Michael Green. So the groups have been put together by ladder standings for the Spackler Trophy (don’t forget it Bathwater) and will go off in reverse order, so that those in contention for the trophy are playing together.

Remember we have a sausage sizzle from 10.30 for tee off at 11.25, this will give us plenty of time to sledge each other and comment on dodgy looking swings and putting techniques before the real action begins. Groups as follows with current Spackler trophy position and in brackets amount of points behind first place;

Group 1
Stu 37 (-54)                         Mikael  35 (-53)                 Bathwater 28 (51)            Herb 24 (-44)

Group 2
Ben 23 (-43)                        Phil         22 (-42)                 Glen            21 (-40)           Mudge 18 (-31)

Group 3

Group 4
Matt 13 (-22)                      Joey       12 (-21)                 Tim               11 (-20)           Dan 10 (-18)

Group 5

Group 6
Johan 4 (-9)                         Coxy      3 (-8)                     Paddy          2 (-6)              Drapper 1, The current leader with 54 points.

Also don’t forget to get into Power Golf to purchase any essentials before Sunday and tell them we are in the system as Spackler Golf.

Recollections of Spackler XVI

Tackling the US Open style Spackler course of Eastlake GC sends a shiver down the spines of everyone in the club. It's definitely not Deano's favourite course and now we can add a few more to the list. Getting to the turn with some sort of score is essential.

I had the honour of playing with Ben, Joe and Angus.

Joey spent a lot of time with his eye peering through his range finder igving us updates on how much closer to the hole we had advanced and Angus raised the art of making cheeky comments to a new level. He seemed to have a line that matched every situation we encountered but was left speechless when his ball ended up smack bang in the middle of a small bush. It was lying neatly in the direct centre of this circular bush. "I can play that", and he did. Completely destroying the obviously redundant piece of nature in the process.

I've played with Ben many times but he still baffled me with a line out of left field. With five holes gone and zero points on the score card, it was fair to say that Ben's game stunk. In dire need of composure and fully aware of the stench oozing from his golf game, he did what every golfer would do - ask for some deodorant. When he asked me if I had any in my bag, he'd actually accumulated a few points and only after a few moments I realised he was serious. He'd gone out to play golf without any deodorant and realised his mistake.

A future note, if Ben stinks, so does his game. Look out of he turns up smelling like roses at Riverside Oaks.

Spackler XIII - A recollection

Report

All reviews of a major golf tournament should generally be done in the days immediately following the event in the interest of fair and accurate journalism. With this in mind, it is safe to say that a review of the Spackler XII Invitational which was held a few months ago now, could well be littered with falsehoods. Let's call them embellishments.

Let us begin with a fact. Simon Cox won his first plaid jacket in a count back from Paddy. It was the second time a count-back* has been used to decide a jacket in the history of the Spackler Invitationals^. He pipped Paddy by a single shot on the final nine holes to be declared the winner.

Drapper, in his first Spackler Invitational had called himself in as the winner days before and given the ridiculous handicap he was given, most people had agreed. He finished with 42 points for the day but as he was on debut, he claimed the winners cheque only. The priceless plaid jacket would have to wait for another day.

Coxy was pleased for the extra layer of warmth on a cold, wet day. Dave Elms, as previous winner had pulled in with it on earlier (as opposed to Merce, who once pulled with it on) and most Spackler invitees were hoping it would be theirs at the end of the day.

One man who was not focussed on the jacket was Duncan.  After rushing to the course, he panicked and locked his keys in his car. While AD read the terms and conditions of the Spackler event at the pre-round lunch, Duncan was anxiously waiting for the NRMA to arrive before his tee time. With the clubs locked in the boot, it was looking like he would have to caddy for Greeny for the day.

Other recollections include Dave Elms having no luck around bunkers all day. He proceeded to keep his head and plough on through the sandy maelstrom unlike another member of the same group. Spackler VI winner Chris Mercer and ditched the jeans and completed his opening nine holes in one over par if I remember correctly.

You could be forgiven for thinking Chris was playing like a man in jeans through 11, 12 and 13 though. He proceeded to power hook and fade his way into deep rough and out-of-bounds to throw himself firmly out of jacket contention. My lasting impression of him that day will be the forlorn figure strolling up and down fences and out-of-bounds lines as the rain set in, mumbling, cursing and generally feeling very sorry for himself indeed.

Deano attempted much the same stuff at one point who also set about looking for errant balls hit fairly and squarely out-of-bounds. The Mercer conditioning is easily contracted.

I'm sure there's more stories from more groups. If you have any I'll add it below. Remember, don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

* The best score on the final nine holes is deemed the winner. In the event of a tie, the best score on 18 is used to determine the winner. If it is still a tie, the 17th is used, and so on.
^ Merce won on a count-back from Ben at Eastlake at Spackler VI. In jeans.

Spackler V - Report

Camden Lakeside, May 2008

Leaderboard

As part of our build up to Spackler XIII we look back at the very first Spackler event held at Camden Lakeside, Spackler V. Here’s the report by AD. The man loves his exclamation marks.

Camden Lakeside was the lucky recipient of the Carl Spackler Social Groups 5th invitational event and proved to be a most popular venue, as the facilities provided practice range, practice greens and more importantly a half way stop for a sausage banger!!

For the first time in Spackler history we didn’t have the defending Champ in the field, Greeny’s father in-law had been very ill in the last few months and unfortunately he lost his battle, our condolences go out to Greeny and his wife Daina.

I must admit it was most interesting to arrive at Camden to find the majority of players either on the range hitting warm up balls or practice putting, this is not a normal state of affairs for a Spackler event, but shows how seriously the guys are about winning the jacket and having their names on the jacket pocket, some may call this start to an event cheating, but what it probably really shows is that old bones take longer to get into gear then young ones!

Standing on the first ready to go, the only problem we seemed to have was, where were Duncan and Timo? Well Duncan made it in time to play in the 4th group and Timo made it to tee off with the last group, no warm ups there! The other absentee was Darryl Tweedale who apparently could not resist the temptation of more beer and a bevy of beautiful girls after the rugby the night before, this didn’t deter a few others with Merce sighted at The Clock Hotel in the wee hours and Schmude turning up looking like he’d just finished a bottle of whiskey in the car on the way!!!

Anyway, we were off, with newcomers, Greg Seisun and Darren Brownlee taking their chance to hit off before the majority of the gallery had time to get to the tee so they didn’t have to perform in front of the sledging hoards, so the rest of the day turned out like this:

At the turn it was a stacked leader board with AD and Ben leading the way with 21 points followed by Schmude 19 and Merce 18, Rudi 16, James and Paddy both 15and the rest of the field needing big scores to feature or just trying to regain confidence for the next tournament!

A couple of highlights from the front nine include Deano not scoring a point over the first 4 holes, only to be bettered by Mike, who didn’t score a point over the first 5 holes, AD knocking in a bird on the 2nd, and Ben wasting a big scoring opportunity on the par 3, 9th where he didn’t record a point even though it was a two shot hole for him! Mike had the highest gross score after nine of 66, while Schmude had the lowest with a 39!

After stopping for a sausage banger after the 9th, it was back to business. Could Ben and AD continue their red hot form? Now Schmude had sobered up would that affect his back 9? Would the short price favourite (The Swede) be able to conjure up a fight back? Could Mike go even higher? Was James really seen in the corner with all his wedges pleading with them to let him chip onto a green? Would Deano try and go for 5 holes without a point on the back to match Mike? Where is Darryl Tweedale (hope she was worth it?!)? What the hell is that group in front of us doing?! What was the ratio of kransky to sausage sandwiches for Spackler golfers and what does it sound like when a dove cries??

Another 3 holes down and it looked like this, Ben flying adding a further 9 points to be clear leader on 30, followed by Schmude 28, AD 27, Merce 26, James 23, Paddy 21.Through two more and Ben still led by two over AD and Schmude with Merce another two back!

With just two left to play and they being index 1 and 3 anything could still eventuate, Benled by one over AD. Schmude looked to have blown his chance by putting a ball into the drink on 16 and only scoring three points over the previous three holes, while Merce was still in there with a shot. The big news though was Garrick was two under for the back nine after birdies on 11 and 15.

The two leaders both received two shots on the final two holes, so it would come down to whose game would stand up under the pressure!

On 17, Ben had a 5 for three, while AD three putted his way to 6 for two. Schmude went 4 for three, while Merce was gone having a 5 for two leaving him five off the pace. This left Ben with a 2 point break heading to the last hole. Any points would see him win with AD and Schmude needing big points! Meanwhile Garrick was still two under heading to the last and looking at a remarkable turnaround from his front nine 14-over 50!

What transpired was AD triple bogeyed the last with a three putt for one point, total 41 points, gone! Schmude, needed a birdie or what would be a 3 for 4 points, what he got was a par which gave him 3 points for a total of 41 points, gone! Merce needed an eagle, but didn’t even get close with a triple bogey and no points for a total of 38, gone! Ben did exactly as he had to, any points would do, and he managed a triple bogey for one point, leaving him a clear winner on 43 points!

Oh and what about Garrick you ask, well he just needed par or bogey to stay under the card for the back nine, guess what happened…………triple bogey to finish 2 over for the nine!!! It’s a cruel game!!!

Great work Ben, it was only time before he smashed his handicap and took the jacket, but can he defend it next time????

Some curious stats
Mike sets a record for most holes without scoring a point (5).
Greg Bible had six 7’s in a row (record).
Ben led from the first hole, to record a wire to wire victory!
Garrick won both longest drives, apparently smashing his balls to somewhere around the 300m mark.
Paddy and Timo won a Nearest the Pin each.

We’re also introducing our version of the FedEx Cup, called the Spackler Cup, it’ll be an accumulation of your points over the year, so this year there’ll be four events with your best three included as your points total, it gives you the benefit of dropping out your worst score or doesn’t penalize players who didn’t get the chance to play all four events.

Cheers AD

Spackler Clubhouse: A review

I reviewed the unofficial (or is it official?) Spackler Golf clubhouse recently after a few of us went along to try it out.

I’m right up for doing it again and am keen to find out how to get in this Tin Cup competition.

Spackler XIII - The Field

Greeny – A new dad, but thinks that his golf is not appreciated, maybe it’s not, maybe he’s the Nick O’Hern of Spackler?

Merce – Chris has stopped talking about playing good golf and actually started playing some, geez what’s next?

Herb – As above, but the biggy is can he win the jacket? The weight of the jacket weighs heavily on his shoulders or is it a monkey?

Ben – Remember Joe the camera man said “can’t bowl, can’t throw”, fill in the missing word “can drive, can chip, can’t ____”

Matty – Makybe Kent might just take over from Merce in the talking about good golf stakes, seems right.

Bathwater – Has become an arrogant bore since his winning the trophy last year, culminating in racially abusing other groups at St Michaels!!!! (see blog)

Deano – This could be the year of Dean, made it through his wedding, loss of wedding ring, capsized canoe and more last year, what doesn’t kill you…!

The Super Swede’s – Johan, Martin & Mikael, lets see who’s who, a Volvo safe and reliable, Saab the car company GM don’t want or Koenigsegg super car, super fast, super expensive, will the weekends results tell us?

Elmsy – ran off with the jacket at Glenmore, no I really mean ran off, took the jacket and left without shouting a beer…….strange lad!

Paddy – the renegade, was so determined to play the last round last year that he nearly started a breakaway tour by organising his own group!

Glen – shared the spoils of the weekend away by taking apart The Vintage, wants the jacket more then anything.

The cricket fraternity – Dan, Nick & Jimmy, lets compare them to the Waugh brothers, one will go down as a great, another as elegant & stylish who should’ve scored more and the other one still trying to crack grade cricket……you mean there’s a third? Who will be, Steve, Mark & Dean?

AD – a pioneer of Spackler golf, but like all good pioneers seems to be lost in the golfing wilderness, oblivious to the fact he’s lost! What?

Angus – Herb says he’s good bloke, that raised the first flag, then said he’s member of Pennant Hills, well they let all sorts in there, my brother for one!

Coxy – a new dad, again, has come close to a win, but just can’t crack it, oh well there’s always next year?

Duncan – a Spurs fan & once missed indoor cricket to go to the movies, what else can I say.

Cr*pper – won his first time out, but since then his golf has resembled his nickname!!!

Drapper – younger sibling of Cr*pper, son of Murapper & Darapper, hopes to emulate his big bro’s first up win……..tell him he’s dreamin.

Mudge – twice a year Wakeling makes his regular early year appearance before disappearing into a waratah’s black hole, then reappears at Glenmore ever year.

Tim – no relation to the great Bozo of Many Sea Eagles fame, but can grow a moustache like no one’s business….bring it back, c’mon?

Spackler XIII reminder

Ok, it's showtime.

We need to be at Twin Creeks by midday on Sunday. No later.

If you want to hit some balls on the range get there a bit before midday as the green fee for the day includes lunch. We tee off directly after.

While we eat, we can run through a few things before play and make sure we all are sorted and ready.

Remember the lunch is part of the inclusive price. If you don’t want it you’ll still be paying for it!

I believe there is a competition running and we'll all be included in that for those with AGU handicaps.

Good luck!

Any predictions? You'll have your name up in lights next week if you pick correctly!

I'll take Chris Mercer and throw $5 in the ring. Anyone else want to pick a player and throw in $5?

DRaper claims to have Spackler 13 in the bag

This in from a now regular Spackler member, Chris Raper after his round last weekend:

After my brother, Damian, socially shot 43 points off the handicap I nominated for him, 22, at Killara yesterday he has received his new OFFICIAL handicap from Avalon this morning... it’s a Bathwater-esque handicap of 31.3!!

CRaper's brother Draper then went on to say, "I think Spackler is in the bag". no one has said this since Matty Kent out at Kooindah Waters.

Spackler golfer rattles St.Michael's

A few Spackler golfers were out at St.Michael's Golf Club during the Christmas break and one incident was worth a mention.

According to reliable sources one of the more outspoken, filterless Spackler members (also current Spackler Trophy champion) encountered a St.Michael's course marshall.

"Have you two seen a group of Asians?"

To which the Spackler golfer replied, "Why, aren't they allowed on here?".
