Spackler XII - Report 2

Group 5 by Chris Mercer
Having donned the complete wet weather gear and looking at the rest of the Group, known as Group 5, Merce felt that at least he was going to have the driest pants should the rain clouds deliver their contents for most of the day. Given his partners were, Dean(I’m freshup)’o, Dun(I know I)can and Phil(u know u want me)Ritchie there was a lot of anticipation about how many or few points would be scored in our group.
“I’m freshup” really started with a roar, a half decent drive, a good wedge, a couple of putts and Par, naturally “I’m Fresh Up” made the call early, ‘I could be in for a good day’, only to be quickly reminded by the now inappropriately attired Merce that, ’there is a long way to go yet.’ A lesson for all fast starters, 18 holes is the name of the game. And so it was that “I’m Freshup”s scoring evaporated as quickly as the puddles from the mornings’ downpour. In fact, some of the golf got nasty. That’s harsh actually, his first 6 holes points were, 3,0,3,0,3,0. Given some of us saw a pattern forming we thought he could have a funny day. Unfortunately the next few holes look like, 0,0,2,0,0…. We all make mistakes.
“I Know I” was a picture of almost moments. All day “I Know I” got into good positions, but on occasion he made a meal of the shorter form of the game, but on one memorable occasion he knocked in a double breaking, downhill finishing 18 stride putt which given it was for birdie, meant that he acquired nearly as many points as Deano had scored all day. Watch out for “I Know I” his 30 points could quite easily have been 45, and lurking around the 28 handicap spot, could demolish future Spackler competitions. I forgot to mention, “I Know I” had a moment on the dreaded 9th where he hit his ball in a lake, in the lake on the 18th hole. That’s harsh.
This moves us to the bright star of the day, “U know U want me” had a ludicrous day of ball striking. Given he has mentioned a few lessons and a couple of rounds, “U know U want me” accumulated points as effectively as a Salvo collects coins from future customers in a Pub on a Friday night. The demons started talking to “U know U want me” however, and it got personal, particularly near the green and in bunkers. But given the strength of this Bears Living Legend, he still fought back and took more points as he closed in on the Final hole, and as the crowd of librarians on the hill watched, Phil took aim at a target somewhere well to the left of the green, and struck a beautiful hybrid to the centre of the green. Unfortunately Phil found out that double bogeying a par three is easy for a point when you four putt, what a shame. Butt 36 points, and a lot left on the course, “U know U want me” is sure to feature in future Spacklers.
And what of Merce, well his pants did stay dry all day, and 11 points out and 20 points in offered nothing to shout about, and completed a particularly average year for the former champ.

Spackler shot of the day
The most amusing part was that his ass is actually facing the green, so if he was to get out of the sand in a normal direction he would have had to have climbed very quickly, and he would have ended up probably with his Sand Wedge stuck reasonably deep into the new turf! - Crapper

Group 1 by Stu Rich
It was a nervous first swing with the pressure of the jacket on defending Spackler champion Stuart Rich as he got the day off to a good start with a shot up the middle. Little did the others know that he was once a member of this club back in the day, and local knowledge could have come into play. After missing an early birdie putt, he took a regulation par and was confident of a good day ahead. After a solid drive, Matty Kent started with a sprayed approach that headed towards the driveway entrance to the golf club and an early wipe was recorded.
Dave Elms (eventual winner) was off to a solid start with the big man quietly moving through the earlier Spackler grades. Rounding out the group was the third lefty James where he let his hybrid do the talking through all 18 holes, and what a solid decision that was as this group could have displayed the most consistent and long drives I have been involved in.
Throughout the front 9, Dave kept making pars and scoring points, Matty Kent couldn’t make many putts but was playing with consistency, Stu was up and down like a yo-yo in the early holes before getting some rhythm back, and James was quietly going about his work looking for those double bunger big point scoring holes.
Some drama on the infamous 9th with Stu potting both balls from the tee and the drop zone, with a little controversy as both shots cleared the lake, but hit the bank and rolled back into the water. Now as most of us know, this would call for a drop on the other side of the water, no nearer the hole, but the local rule sign took proceedings here… Stu was joined in the water by James while Matt and Dave safely hit the green with no real troubles.
Dave was a few up after 9, and looking to continue his good form through the back, Matt was level, and Stu and James a couple down. After a midway snack of snags, sausage rolls, the boys crunched away to the 10th with birdie chances going begging. I would love to give you all a total of the amount of birdie putts missed by this group. All in all over the next few holes, drives were smashed, Matt Kent outdrove Stu by about 3m to claim the Long drive on the 13th, and some solid golf was being played. Stu rounded out with a nearest the pin on the par 3 18th (but missed the putt as he did for most of his birdie chances all day).
Eventual winner Dave ended with 42 pts in a hassle free round where he just went about his business like a pro, Stu a solid 38 pts without making any clutch putts, Matty Kent 36 which could have been anything… Look out next Spackler XIII, and James who just needs to let rip with a driver on 26 pts.

Group 3 by Herb
Group 3, as it was known on the Carl Spackler Live Leader board, had an up and down day, however Bathwater’s score of 35 points was more than enough to win the coveted 2009 Carl Spackler Trophy. Other scores in the group were ordinary, Mudge 33, Herb 31, Tim(Tammy) 26.
The highlight of the day came as Bathwater got more and more distracted by the chance of winning $200 cash. By the 17th hole he was so caught up with the money he started bagging the importance of the jacket which backfired badly and this is a lesson to all those who play for money and not the Jacket. After the slagging the Jacket he missed his short putt on 17 and proceeded this by hitting his next two shots into the lake on 18, game over. Chris, in a first for Spackler Golf, has been officially reported to the Spackler Committee for disciplinary procedures, so watch the Spackler Blog sight for Judge AD decision.
Tim or Tammy as he became fondly know as, started okay but found great difficulty understanding you weren’t meant to have two chips(rather putts) on each hole. Tammies mental issues got worse as he just could hit the ball past the hole on the green and got heavily questioned about his sexuality. He still had a smile at the end of the day when many of us would have just walked off.
Mudge got off to a flyer with 20 points in the first nine with some great stroke play, at this point he realised he might win if he kept it up, so he blobbed the next two holes and tailed off for a disappointing 33 points in all, maybe next time Mudge. Like Bathwater, he will go in front of the disciplinary committee for taking off with the scores cards and doing a good job of disqualifying himself and his cart buddy(Herb). I understand he got a call from the Wife to come home fast, however I’m not sure AD will have much forgiveness for this excuse.
Herb was never in the contest at the Heritage, a result due to significant mental damage from a shanking feast the night before. How come practise works for Tiger Woods?

Group 4 by Greeny
Nick, Ben and Greeny made up the 4th group out for the day and it didn't take Nick and Ben long to get themselves on the board with some fine pars on the first. Ben shot out the blocks with 9 points after 3 holes and was the early leader. Glen managed to breathe a sigh of relief on the 4th gathering his first point for the day, he wasn't to get another 'til the 7th - the biggest culprit, his putter.
Nick began to find water and all players were glad to see the end of the 6th hole with only Ben getting a point. The putts on the green resembled a snapshot from a LHC experiment - particles spiralling off in all directions. Only Nick struggled on the par-3 ninth and going into the back nine, Ben had turned with 21 points and in second place.
Glen's putter decided to play hard ball on the 10th and he rattled in a solid birdie putt that made the back of the whole about a half inch bigger than it was before we arrived. Greeny was solid on the greens as well and really could not have shot any better on the day despite hitting OOB on the short par-3 12th. Ben was rattling along at a great pace but wiped 3 of 4 holes through 13 to 16.
Shout's of "Smurf Power!" greeted Nick from Crapper's group after he'd struggled yet again off the tee on 15 but he managed to pull together a nice couple of holes to finish well including a great par on 17. Glen was beginning to show what could be done once he learns how to putt with 17 points on the back nine and a great up and down (to zero applause) on the final hole.
Greeny's pressure cooker comments had the reverse effect on Ben over the finishing holes. Sensing he might be able to psyche BW out of a good round, Ben responded beautifully with two pars to finish the day. He did however admit later that he was very close to crumbling completely. Lock that away for next time everyone.

Group 6 by AD
Group 6 consisted of a 2009 Jacket winner, a father in-law/son in-law combination and former double winner and inaugural trophy winner! These players also went by the names of Johan, Richard (debut), Nathan and AD!
Heading out last this group felt like they played into the wind on every hole, although AD showed some early glimpses of form of years past with back to back 3 pointers on the 2nd and 3rd holes, that was the highlight of his round! Johan was struggling early losing a ball on each of the first two holes and literally looking under every tree and bush for a point, managing 1 in the first 5 holes and hitting the turn with a total of 7! That pretty much left his trophy aspirations in the hazard and unplayable!
Richard, with the worlds most controlled fade went about hitting fairways and greens and hit the turn with a respectable 15 points. Nathan playing his second game of golf in a week, which was also his second game in a year, couldn’t convert enough 1 pointers into 2’s and 3’s and on the back couldn’t hang on to salvage even a few one pointers, in a day I’m sure he’s rather forget, unless it was some sort of, let your father in-law beat you type of capers!!
On the inward 9, Johan found some form with 18 points, hit some big drives and played more what resembled golf then he had earlier in the day, often to be heard repeating “I’ve probably played 500 rounds of golf in my life, but never this bad…” I really think he was just overawed early by the fact he was sitting next to one of Spackler Golf’s grand champions!!!
Richard didn’t have a bad inward 9, he again just couldn’t convert into big scores, although it could’ve been that the nurofen and beer combination he had BEFORE play was starting to wear off!!! Nathan had conceded to his father in-law and had also given up more then a few balls to the golfing gods, maybe two games in a year is just to much?!
AD was horrible on the way in, hitting three off the tee about 4 holes in a row to start the back nine, it felt more like the driving range then a competitive round, generally the snap hook was followed by something more resembling a golf shot, straight and down the middle, but he had little left by the end and provided little more then light entertainment for his playing group, maybe I’ll try the nurofen/beer combo and see if that works!!

2009 Spackler Trophy - final results
Outlined below is a detailed look at the final results for the 2009 Spackler Trophy. Won by none other than Chris Braithwaite.

Some Spackler Stats

Spackler VII Results
As Spackler XII rolls around this weekend at Glenmore Heritage I thought it would be a good idea to look back at what happened the last time we played the event here - the winner was an emphatic AD.

It was a historic day which saw AD not only wear the jacket home but also take the trophy in a performance that will go down in Spackler folklore. "Where were you the day AD got 47 points?" they'll say. Or if you're Stumpy you might say "48 points would have won it today", as he did at the 19th over a beer on Sunday afternoon. Let's start with his description of the exploits of Group 2.
The roll call cranked up early on the Saturday and 3 lucky names were plucked out of the hat for Group 2 – Jonathan, Phil and Duncan. I’d played indoor cricket for the mighty ‘ZT Sensations’ with Duncan at some stage (I think) but Phil was introduced to me on the day. We did the usual pleasantries before clambering onto our carts and heading off to the 1st tee. Duncan and Phil both got away nicely but yours truly duffed one into the scrub in front of most of the players in the comp – GREAT START JONATHAN. Fortunately I recovered with the second attempt off the tee and Group 2 was away.
We all played fairly ordinary golf on the front nine. We were struggling with our short irons and couldn’t nail a putt to save ourselves. Fortunately for me, the planets aligned on hole nine and a nice birdie was added to the score card. We all decided that surely we couldn’t play any worse on the back nine and so it was. Finally our drives were finding the fairway (well most of the time) and the putts started to drop for all members of our group.
Duncan hit a couple of cracking drives and some really nice short iron shots on the day. Phil consistently amazed me with his uncanny ability to start his shot 50 yards to the left of the fairway and then bring it back onto the middle with a long casual slice. Phil’s iron shots were solid throughout the day but like me, he had some issues with the putter when it counted. All in all a really enjoyable round of golf and it was great to play with Phil and Duncan. I look forward to my next assault on the Spackler title and to having a hit with some of you other blokes as well. [Stumpy]
Group 3 went out with quite high expectations although to be honest most of us would have been very happy with 36 points. The group was made up of Chris Raper (the East Lakes money winner), Herb, Coxy and the infamous Deano. As it was a couple of us did get around 36 points but clearly AD had this score by the 13 hole and so scoring was irrelevant.
Most of the ground on the course was patrolled by the buggies, Deano and I(Herb) hardly ever hitting the ball in the same direction and often leaving the other to walk. In the end Deano found some form previously not seen in a Spackler tournament and came in the top three for the day. Well done! (Timo, this showed there is hope for you). Coxy tried to get a competitive score together but couldn’t hang on making school boy like mistakes too often, however he could be top 3 at Riverside Oaks early next year, (his home club), you heard it here first.
The biggest lesson issued by the Gods within this group was to Chris R (Cr*pper) and others like him who play well in their first Spackler event (yes that’s you Justin). When the heat came on to play for the jacket he was nowhere to be seen (certainly not his golf balls anyway). I think it will be a while before we see him pushing for the jacket. Cr*pper I suggested you talk to Michael Campbell for advice on getting out of a bad run. [Herb]
Group 4 was always going to produce something special, the four ball consisted of Matt Kent (raging $4.00 favourite), Bathwater (Chris B) who has played with the eventual winner no less then 4 times, Mudge who will one day bring his A-game and walk away with all the prizes and AD who was quietly confident after putting in two good rounds back to back!
It all started normally enough. A par and three bogeys to start, but things took off after the par 3, 3rd, when AD holed a twelve footer for birdie. This was a precursor of what was to follow, AD birdied the next and all of a sudden had 12 points from 4 holes! It was also halfway through the front nine that Matt probably knew it wouldn’t be his day, the weight of favouritism and a wayward driver took full effect and although he hung in there, the frustration was evident. As for the other three, well they kept the scoreboard turning over, Mudge turned with 17 points, Bathwater with a healthy 20, but now on, including the player himself could believe that AD turned the corner with 25 stableford points!! It seemed the trophy had a home, but the jacket was still to be had, so refusing to add up the actual tally until well into the second 9, Group 4 enjoyed bacon and egg rolls and got back into it.
AD’s form kept up, with another 22 points on the back, while Mudge soldiered on adding 16. Bathwater, went to water only managing to only add 10 to his tally and Matt continued to struggle. His driver was kind enough to let him on the 13th smoking the competition with the longest drive, 50m past the marker! There were plenty of highlights with AD's early birdies, Matt’s big hitting and a match play comp which was still alive with two to play (eventually won by Mudge & AD). Another highlight was coming across group 2 (Phil, Stumpy and Duncs) who had a long and dry day. When I offered them a beer each it was like watching those mad women who line up to go shopping on those massive stocktake days. They came running fast and furious. I feared that if I didn’t offer them one then they would smell it on me as I drove past and just take what they wanted!!! [AD]
After the first 4 groups had made their way onto the Glenmore Heritage Golf Course a sombre mood swept over Group 5 consisting of Justin, Rudi, Timo and Greeny. The fanfare had gone and in truth, there was no one watching who could care less about where their tee shots were going. It just added to our determination and every tee shot was hit with a confidence not normally associated with a Spackler grouping.
Rudi and Greeny had a solid front nine with 20 and 22 points respectively. Something AD had achieved by the 4th. There were high expectations on the Chuck Taylored Timo who took the Saturday night off to be focussed and sober for the day. A red tinge forced him to tell the group of all the ladies he met during his 7 hour stint on Bondi Beach the day before. This recollection transposed itself into his mind as a love of sand and Timo proceeded to enter nearly every bunker on course. On several occasions, not willing to choose favourites, he made sure he tried out several bunkers around one green.
Debutant Justin looked the goods right from the start and a brand new, fairly high handicap from his home course belied his true golfing ability. He finished with 42 points with the highlight for me coming on the 3rd tee where he hit a 3 wood 70 metres straight up in the air landing only 20 metres from the tee. This guy has skills and could soon be the Harlem Globetrotter of Spackler Golf. He will be very dangerous in events to come.
Rudi and Greeny fell apart a little on the back nine and clawed on to something of a score. Rudi had begun to empty his esky on the 14th after realising his day was over. All groups would have started drinking a lot earlier had we known what AD was shooting. [Greeny]
